Should I Get Travel Insurance

There are five basic types of Travel Insurance: trip cancellation, travel medical, travel major medical, emergency medical evacuation, death/flight accident.

Trip Cancellation Insurance covers the non-refundable trip costs if you can't travel due to unforeseen circumstances such as a serious illness. It also covers you if you become sick during your trip and have to return home.

Travel Medical and Travel Major Medical Insurance cover medical expenses of the insured should something happen on a trip. Mind that most travel medical insurance policies generally cover only "emergencies."

Emergency medical evacuation insurance provides coverage for medically necessary evacuations and transportation to medical facilities for treatment.

Death/Flight Accident Insurance is a life insurance policy that covers you when you are traveling on the airplane. In the event of an accident the insured or the beneficiaries are liable to coverage and corresponding reimbursement.

Other types of Travel Insurance include Baggage Insurance, Trip Delay and Assistance Insurance.

Insurance costs vary, but normally packages are between 5 and 12 percent of the total trip cost.

The cost of insurance also depends on the traveler's age and the amount of coverage.
