Blue shield insurance may refer to two different insurance types. The first is the case of abbreviation from Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association (BCBSA). BCBSA is a conglomeration of 39 companies providing healthcare plans within specified regions each of them is responsible for. Originally Blue Cross was used for hospital coverage, and Blue Shield was used for medical plans. Nowadays this differentiation is valid only in Pennsylvania.

The second application of blue shield insurance is Blue Shield of California. Blue Shield of California is a not-for-profit health insurance provider. It specializes in providing a wide spectrum of insurance benefit options, focusing on individual and family life and health insurance plans. Among the products of Blue Shield of California there are HMO, preferred provider organizations, dental and Medicare supplemental plans. The subsidiary organizations may offer accidental death, vision, executive medical reimbursement, short-term health plans.

Blue shield insurance normally works in conjunction with Medicare offering single and family plans, employer provided coverage and Medicare coverage for those nearing retirement or over 65.
